What personal data we collect and why we collect it
Depending on what you do on this site, your data may be collected for a number of different reasons. This data may include personal information that you offer, such as your name and email address in comments, the contact form, or the newsletter signup form.
If you purchase anything, transaction data, such as purchase information, will be collected. The site may also collect technical data, such as information about cookies, and analytical data, such as the browser or platform you’re using or whether you got here through a web search. If you share posts, third-party sites such as Twitter or Facebook may also collect data so that your shares will be connected to your accounts at those sites.
We collect this data for a variety of reasons, depending on the context of your visit. The reasons are explained below, and your options for what happens to your data are explained below as well.
When you leave comments on posts, we collect the data you enter in our comments form, and also your IP address and browser user agent string to help with spam detection. Our spam detection service is Akismet.
An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may also be sent to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it.
After your comment is approved, your profile picture (if you have one) will be visible next to your comment. If you don’t have a profile picture, the site will assign a randomized geometric avatar to you, and that avatar will be yours if you make future comments.
If you would like us to delete your comment(s), you can contact us by email here.
You can use our contact form to send us questions. The form collects the data you enter and your question or comment, and sends us an email. These form submissions remain on the site indefinitely, but we do not use the information submitted through them (or your email address) for any other purpose. This contact form is a feature of the Ninja Forms plugin.
When you leave a comment, we also collect your IP address and browser user agent string to help with spam detection. Our spam detection service is Akismet.
If you would like to download a copy of your contact form information (if any), you can request it here.
If you would like to delete the data from your contact form entry, you can request that we do so here.
This site adds cookies to help identify you as a commenter. If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address, and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.
If you make a purchase from this site, the Woo Commerce purchasing software may also add cookies to help keep track of your order. See below for WooCoomerce data collection information.
Embedded content from other websites
Posts on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Some of this embedded content from other websites (such as YouTube or Instagram) may behave in the exact same way as if you visited that other website.
We use the Jetpack analytics system to track visits to this site and views of specific pages. This helps us understand which posts or pages are the most relevant to people.
Jetpack also tells us about the search terms people use to find our site, and this helps us create posts to answer these requests more clearly. For instance, Karla McLaren created the free Emotional Vocabulary List because so many search terms included the word vocabulary.
Jetpack also tracks the platforms visitors use so that we can be aware of how our site works on phones, tablets, and desktops.
Subscriptions to Posts
If you subscribe to our posts, the site will collect your email address and send you a notification each time a new post is published. If you would like to unsubscribe, you can contact us by email here.
Karla McLaren Newsletter
When you sign up for our newsletter, the site gathers your name and email address, and your agreement to receive monthly newsletters. Your email address is never used for any other purpose, and you can unsubscribe at any time.
Our newsletter program is a WordPress plugin developed by Tribulant, and it gathers data on how many newsletters we send to you, whether you open them or not, whether you click on any of the links, and whether you unsubscribe.
When you purchase items from our bookshop, we use the WooCommerce program to manage your order and connect with PayPal for your payment. PayPal connects to the US Postal Service to gather your address and prepare your shipping and packing labels.
We collect information about you during the checkout process on our store.
For payments with PayPal: Purchase total, currency, billing information.
For taxes: The value of goods in the cart, value of shipping, destination address.
For checkout rates: Destination address, purchased product IDs, dimensions, weight, and quantities.
For shipping labels: Your name, address as well as the dimensions, weight, and quantities of purchased products.
What we track and store
While you visit our site, we’ll track:
• Products you’ve viewed: we’ll use this to, for example, show you products you’ve recently viewed
• Location, IP address and browser type: we’ll use this for purposes like estimating taxes and shipping
• Shipping address: we’ll ask you to enter this so we can, for instance, estimate shipping before you place an order, and send you the order!
When you purchase from us, we’ll ask you to provide information including your name, billing address, shipping address, email address, phone number, credit card/payment details and optional account information like username and password. We’ll use this information for purposes, such as, to:
• Send you information about your account and order
• Respond to your requests, including refunds and complaints
• Process payments and prevent fraud
• Comply with any legal obligations we have, such as calculating taxes
If you create an account, we will store your name, address, email and phone number, which will be used to populate the checkout for future orders.
We generally store information about you for as long as we need the information for the purposes for which we collect and use it, and we are not legally required to continue to keep it. For example, we will store order information for 5 years for tax and accounting purposes. This includes your name, email address, and billing and shipping addresses.
We will also store comments or reviews, if you choose to leave them.
Who on our team has access
Members of our team have access to the information you provide us. For example, Administrator can access:
• Order information such as what was purchased, when it was purchased and where it should be sent, and
• Customer information such as your name, email address, and billing and shipping information.
We have access to this information to help fulfill orders, process refunds, and support you.
What we share with others
We share information with PayPal and the US Postal Service, who help us complete and send your order to you:
How long we retain your data
The data our site collects is retained indefinitely, though you can ask us to delete it at any time. In some cases, keeping this data will help you in future visits to this site. For instance, if you leave a comment, your comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so the site can recognize and approve your follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.
How we protect your data
This site is protected through constant monitoring and updating of all apps and plugins, through technical measures such as encryption and two factor authentication, and by daily monitoring by Sucuri, our web host SiteGround, and the support staff at GoWP.
What data breach procedures we have in place
We do not store any financial data here on the site; if you purchase anything, your data will be protected by PayPal. The only personal data that could be gathered here is your name, email address, and IP address. If there is a data breach that affects you, we will attend to it as soon as we learn of it and contact you to let you know what happened and what the possible problems and solutions are.
What rights you have over your data
If you have left comments, filled out a contact form, or made purchases here, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.
If you would like to download the file of data we hold about you (if any), you can request it here.
If you would like to delete the data we hold about you (if any), you can request that we do so here.
