What personal data we collect and why we collect it

Depending on what you do on this site, your data may be collected for a number of different reasons. This data may include personal information that you offer, such as your name and email address in comments, the contact form, or the newsletter signup form.

If you purchase anything, transaction data, such as purchase information, will be collected. The site may also collect technical data, such as information about cookies, and analytical data, such as the browser or platform you’re using or whether you got here through a web search. If you share posts, third-party sites such as Twitter or Facebook may also collect data so that your shares will be connected to your accounts at those sites.

We collect this data for a variety of reasons, depending on the context of your visit. The reasons are explained below, and your options for what happens to your data are explained below as well.

If you would like to download a copy of your contact form information (if any), you can request it here.

If you would like to delete the data from your contact form entry, you can request that we do so here.

Comments Form

When you leave comments on posts, we collect the data you enter in our comments form, and also your IP address and browser user agent string to help with spam detection. Our spam detection service is Akismet.

Akismet Privacy Policy (Automattic)

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may also be sent to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it.

Gravatar Privacy Policy (Automattic)

After your comment is approved, your profile picture (if you have one) will be visible next to your comment. If you don’t have a profile picture, the site will assign a randomized geometric avatar to you, and that avatar will be yours if you make future comments.

If you would like us to delete your comment(s), you can contact us by email here.

Contact Form

You can use our contact form to send us questions. The form collects the data you enter and your question or comment, and sends us an email. These form submissions remain on the site indefinitely, but we do not use the information submitted through them (or your email address) for any other purpose. This contact form is a feature of the Ninja Forms plugin.

NinjaForms Privacy Policy

When you leave a comment, we also collect your IP address and browser user agent string to help with spam detection. Our spam detection service is Akismet.

Cookies

This site adds cookies to help identify you as a commenter. If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address, and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

If you make a purchase from this site, the Woo Commerce purchasing software may also add cookies to help keep track of your order. See below for WooCoomerce data collection information.

Embedded content from other websites

Posts on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Some of this embedded content from other websites (such as YouTube or Instagram) may behave in the exact same way as if you visited that other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracing your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Analytics

We use the Jetpack analytics system to track visits to this site and views of specific pages. This helps us understand which posts or pages are the most relevant to people.

Jetpack also tells us about the search terms people use to find our site, and this helps us create posts to answer these requests more clearly. For instance, Karla McLaren created the free Emotional Vocabulary List because so many search terms included the word vocabulary.

Jetpack also tracks the platforms visitors use so that we can be aware of how our site works on phones, tablets, and desktops.
